Last night,
joel_rosenberg and I picked up our friend
lydy around 5:45pm and headed to the St Paul Hotel, http://www.stpaulhotel.com/ . We handed our car to the valet, checked in, stowed our bags in the room and walked over to the Xcel. Ticketbastard had messed up and we had to pick up our tickets at will-call. Fortunately, there was no line and only a slight hassle(we needed to show Joel's ID, as his credit card bought the tickets) and then we were set to hear The Who. We had main floor seats off the side aisle. Lydy and I had the first of several drinks and soon the Pretenders did their set. Chrissie Hynde still has it. They were good, real good in fact, but not what I came to see.
After a short intermission - enough time to go to the bathroom, but not to get through the line for another drink - it was time. First song was "I Can't Explain" and the place went wild - up on our feet and singing along. I was so happy that the crowd knew the new stuff, too. I was afraid I'd be one of the few that had memorized Endless Wire.
Alas, poor Roger had bronchitis, and after "Won't Get Fooled Again" announced he had nothing left to give. That meant that Pete and the audience sang the two encore songs, "My Generation" and "Naked Eye." Pete said they'd make it up to us next time they hit the Twin Cities. Still an amazing concert with tremendous multi-media and Pino and Zak much better in the mix.
After the concert, we headed over to our favorite sushi place, Sakura, http://www.sakurastpaul.com/ . As we walked in, the owner, Miyoko Omori said, "How many in your par---Oh, it's you!" There were hugs all around and we ate some great sushi, drank some hot sake and packed up the few leftover pieces for Lydy to take home.
We then headed back to the St Paul Hotel for some B & B, Remy Martin and a martini to finish up the evening. We put Lydy into a cab home and Joel & I headed up to our room.
And so to bed.
The next morning, Joel & I had breakfast in the hotel's M Street Cafe, http://www.mstreetcafe.com/ ,where I had wonderful Swedish Pancakes with ligonberries. Then we checked out and headed home.
All in all, a pretty damn good 51st birthday celebration.
